We offer a service for individuals, pipe bands and businesses who would like to order a length of kiltmaking tartan woven to a design.
It is our aim to achieve this at a competitive price and in a timely fashion. We recomend that a minimum of 25m of tartan is ordered in the interest of costs per metre as we pay minimum batch charges to our contractors for certain parts of the process.
We hold yarns in a range of colours and are currently developing our standard stock core colour range which we aim to hold in quantity. We also have many spools of yarn which are not part of the core colour range. It is the most economic to use stock colours that are dyed in larger batches, we can also arrange the dyeing of custom colours on an individual basis at additional cost.
Coloured thread samples can be provided to the customer as part of the order process.
Our weaves are double width with a tuck in Selvedge, woven on Dornier Rapier looms. The finished fabric size is typically in the reigon of 137 – 143 cm wide, shrinkage during finishing varies slightly on an individual batch basis.
So What do we need from you the customer ?
Money available to pay the invoice, that goes without saying…
A tartan design and the rights to weave it – some designs can be freely woven, but not all.
There are many versions of existing well known tartan designs, we reference the Scottish Tartans Register website and other reference material as part of the process in developing a design and preparing a weave specification.
Please note we cannot copy or reproduce a design that is restricted by the owner without the owners written permission, or reproduce another mills design without permission. Our tartan versions have our weave specifications – threadcounts, colour palette and number of repeats. We adjust block and stripe sizes, number of repeats, start points etc to fit the width of the fabric and achieve the desired look.
Our costs and the fees are worked out based on 6 components – Eskdale tartans fee, the yarn cost, Dyeing costs, Weaving operation, Finishing operation and delivery.
Please email us if you would like to work with us to produce some tartan fabric and we will discuss taking your idea further.
